00 Buck or Slugs for Black Bear?

    For defense against black bear, would you go with 00-buck or a slug if you were carrying a shotgun? If the latter, what type? That particular species isn't, generally, known to be aggressive, but they are large, powerful critters.

    12ga slugs are commonly used for self defense against smaller species of bears. I think I'd trust a slug more than buckshot just due to the penetration factor. Sabot slugs are probably ideal, but I'm sure either would work just fine.

    Good point on penetration. Bear hide is pretty tough stuff (fur, fat, etc.). A properly constructed slug, at the right ranges of course, would make more sense.
